Overview
People everywhere take pride in many things, like a favorite athlete, a family member, or ability. People also take pride in their state, the place they call home. The fourth grade year is a key time for a student in regards to state pride. This is the opportunity for them to learn about Indiana history and get to know this place a little better. The goal for this unit is to teach the students Indiana history, but in an updated format. This unit will be divided into two parts – classroom learning and a project. As a fourth grader, nearly fifteen years ago, I was required to create a notebook filled with worksheets about the state. I wanted to implement this kind of idea in some way, but make the process a little more interesting. The first part of this unit will be learning the bulk of Indiana history. There will be several library workdays and worksheets to fill out and after each section of history the students will play a game to see how much they have learned. The second part of the unit is the actual project. This is a “spotlight” project; each student will spotlight a famous Hoosier and create a project fulfilling specific criteria about that person. Hopefully, this unit will keep students interested and they will learn a lot in the process.
